About

Nomie Keusch Baker (she/they) is a computer science educator, comedy producer, and community organizer from Forest Hills, Queens in New York City.[1] New York is a violent, settler-colonial project on stolen land from the Lenape people.

Keusch Baker attended P.S. 196, J.H.S. 157 (Halsey), and LaGuardia Arts High School. After completing a bachelor’s degree in computer science at Emory University, Keusch Baker briefly worked as a corporate software engineer.

As a lifelong educator, Keusch Baker pivoted to teaching middle and high school students how to code through programs such as South Asian Youth Action and the New York City Department of Youth & Community Development Summer Youth Employment Program with Queens Community House. A proud product of public schools, the teacher worked at private and charter schools to make ends meet while pursuing a New York State teaching license. However, the costs of a master’s program with CUNY increased financial burden and Keusch Baker once again rethought their career path.

Simultaneously, Keusch Baker created Lenape Lavender Laughs. The grassroots organization features queer, trans and nonbinary comedians and women, with further priority for BIPOC artists. Economic empowerment has been a focus of the project, guaranteeing a fair rate for all performers regardless of ticket sales. Costs are kept low thanks to generous community partners. The signature annual event Lavender Laughs NYC hosts is BLACK & LAVENDER, a fundraiser for the Black Women in Comedy Laff Fest.

Currently working as a substitute teacher and freelance web developer, Keusch Baker is seeking fulltime, stable work in a role that positively impacts Lenapehoking and people everywhere.

[1] The New York City Commission on Human Rights (“Commission”) acknowledges the land politically designated as New York City to be the homeland of the Lenape (Lenapehoking) who were violently displaced as a result of European settler colonialism over the course of 400 years. The Lenape are a diasporic people that remain closely connected with this land and are its rightful stewards. We also recognize that New York City has one of the largest urban Native American / Indigenous populations in the United States.
